HANEEF (working title) – a new work inspired by the true-life story of the arrest and detention of Dr Mohamed Haneef, written by Helen Howard and Michael Futcher. Drawing on transcripts of original documents and police interviews, as well as interviews with many of the key people involved including lawyers, journalists and police, Matrix is currently developing a docudrama about one of the most controversial anti-terror investigations in the last ten years. Haneef tells the story of the heroic efforts of Haneef and his legal team to fight the might of the Australian government and the AFP to get justice in the face of overwhelming odds. It explores the difficult challenge of balancing national security with human and civil rights, as well as questioning a system which enables a government to effectively override a court’s decision, possibly for political ends.
